Heritage open days for 2017 are 7th -10th September.

We are holding our event on the 9th and 10th (Saturday and Sunday) We will not be opening the office as usual for Heritage Open Days but we will  be undertaking our Celebrations project A Day in the Life of a Romany Gypsy (when I was a child) Funded by a Celebrations grant from the Big Lottery, there will be a history time line on display (please see flier here)which will include bender tent, varda, grinding barrow and old time cooking.

This open day in Beeley also includes a living history display of rural life with 18th century cottage, which is on the same site.

In Beeley village hall there will be a book launch please see information here and a local heritage display in the history room so there is much to see and do.

A Gypsy's Tale' is a project that focuses on recording and preserving the heritage, history and culture of Romany Gypsies, and in particular the diversity of their trades and occupations.

We realised that as the labour market changes, and as the traditional Gypsy life becomes increasingly difficult to maintain, there is a danger that unless they are properly recorded, these trades will disappear and be forgotten forever. Accordingly, our project focused on "traditional" occupations and roles. We interviewed community members with the requisite skills and collected their tales. There is now a folder of written tales and each has an accompanying "digital story".

These are available on DVD.

A Gypsy's Tale Funded by The Heritage Lottery

The aim of this project is to challenge stereotypes, to explain who Gypsies are and what they do, to record and preserve traditional occupations, raise awareness amongst the wider society of the community's diversity and history and to involve community members in preserving and presenting their own culture, thereby widening the spread of heritage skills.

All the work for this project was carried out by Gypsy community members. They were assisted by media specialists and experienced film makers Damien Le Bas and Charles Newland, who are also members of our community..

We envisage the outputs of the project becoming part of our wider awareness-raising activities both in the East Midlands and nationally, becoming a key part of our work in schools (such as the "Reading, Writing and Romanies" project was in the South of England). Additionally, the material will be available for use in Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month events and Holocaust Memorial Day. We do not see the project as a one-off exercise whose outputs can then be stored away, but rather as a key element of an on-going awareness-raising process. We are, however, intending that a copy of the main outputs should be lodged in an appropriate venue for wider dissemination, such as the Museum of English Rural Life and the University of Reading.
